Clinical Problem
What is Mitral Valve Regurgitation
Mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is a progressive
disease that occurs when the mitral valve annulus stretches,
preventing the valve leaflets from closing properly. This
results in blood from the left ventricular contraction being
forced back into the left atrium causing ineffective ventricular
perfusion, elevated atrial pressures, and further exacerbating
congestive heart failure. While there are several disease
processes that cause MR, the most common are congestive heart
failure, ischemic mitral regurgitation
and cardiomyopathy.
